Forums at irishgaming.com » Midway: Re: A question about skills I don’t have

Any game requires a certain amount of suspension of disbelief in order to promote a play environment that is as fair to everyone as possible. There are plenty of places in the system where you can take a logic-stick and poke holes in it, but the same can be said of any system.

The underlying rules to the system can be summed up as
1) Keeping things as simple as possible.
2) Ensure that diversity of character types does not suffer.

To that end, skill are constructed as simply and robustly as possible. That said, if one skill can do everything, then there’s no reason not to just take that, and that stifles creative play. Having multiple medic skills, each with a different focus, allows for multiple medic characters to co-exist and interact, making for a richer and more rewarding game experience for everyone.

If you want fluff-based reasoning, here’s something for you to ruminate on:

NotCanonNotCanonNotCanonNotCanonNotCanon

“Surgery is a relatively recent re-discovery, and there’s a awful lot of banks left to be filled in. It’s a risky process, and if something goes wrong, even in a simple procedure, there is a very good chance the patient will die. Similar to when it was being developed in the first place back in the Renaissance period, there’s a lot of mistrust from established medical practitioners (herbalists & people skilled in first aid), who may tend to view surgeons as a bit ghoulish and dangerous, just like the old surgeons of the past were.

Also, surgeons are more interested in digging around in the ruins of pre-End civilisation, seeking to rediscover old medical tech. Again, this is something which may not sit entirely well with traditional groups, who may have a mild technophobia (after all, it was man messing with things he was not meant to that caused the End, right?).

As a result, the establishment may refuse to share their knowledge with those who practice or study surgery.”

An in-game, non-rules-based reason for why a surgeon doesn’t know first aid – the people who knew the techniques just didn’t trust him enough to share their knowledge.

Regarding the vagaries of gun use:
“During the End, many experimental weapons were used. One such was the “Peacemaker Bomb”. A combination of mind-altering chemicals and nanotech, the purpose of the bomb was to render a population incapable of defending itself with advanced weaponry by directly attacking that portion of the brain which affects hand-eye-coordination should a person seek to use any weapon more advanced than a bow and arrow.

Designed to be a temporary effect, the Peacemaker was ultimately too successful. The nanotech in the bomb reacted with other nano-, bio- and edric-variant technologies which had been unleashed into the atmosphere during the days of the End. The longevity of the nanotech was dramatically increased, and the Peacemaker insinuated itself into the very soil and water itself. Over the centuries, it has spread across the land (indeed, the world), infecting every human from the moment of their conception.

However, the violence of man is not so easily repressed. Several meditative tools have been slowly cobbled together by those who would wish to reclaim the power of the ancients, making it possible for a dedicated warrior to learn how to overcome the effects of the Peacemaker. Unfortunately, it has not yet been possible to completely overcome the Peacemaker, as it is far too prevalent in the human body. Instead, a warrior must learn a different set of mental techniques for each weapon they wish to become proficient with.”

Yes, rogue nanotech in your bloodstream did it. Oh, yeah? Well who are you to say that pre-End technology wasn’t capable of such a thing? Are you from the distant future? Just accept that you all study gun-kata, and move on.

What’s edric-variant technology? ...Nothing you need concern yourself about, honest. Just ignore that bit entirely. *nonchalant whistle*

NOTE: The above pieces of fluff are not canon or in-game facts. I made them up on the spur of the moment simply to illustrate an example of an in-game reasoning for what may seem to be arbitrary OOC mechanics.

All,

I've been talking with a GCD photography student called Sylwia about a project she's doing. She's looking to take photos of "people with interesting hobbies" and I figured we all count. If you're interested, her post is in the "General Discussion" forum, or you can go from here - viewtopic.php?f=2&t=774

Hi All,

I'm a photography student at Griffith College Dublin and I'm currently working on a photo essay project about not so usual hobbies.

I'm basically doing a series of portraits; very simple, straight on photos but I also need to show the hobbies in the images. So if the person is a RPG fan, I need to include some artefacts suggesting it in the photograph, or if someone collects comic books/board games, etc., I would need to photograph the person in front of them, and so on.

My main visual inspiration for this is a project done by Steve Schofield (see the link: http://www.steveschofield.co.uk/#!__land-of-the-free). He photographed science-fiction costumers only, I want to show different hobbyists. Age, gender doesn't matter, it's all about various ways of spending your free time.

So if you're interested in posing for me, or if you know someone else willing to stand in front of the camera, please let me know.

Cheers
Sylwia

I, like many, have no interest in rubber-sword and faux fantasy poncing about. I like the physical aspect of LARP combat, especially in cramped or dark situations, but the thees and thous, not so much. So add in shotguns and a fair few affected southern drawls, and its traded all the stuff i consider bad about LARPing with stuff i think is great.

I think the ability to free action is fun, especially when its trivial stuff but adds to the flavour. I'm all about useless social or background skills with my PCs and being able to develop Sewerage or write letters to my Ma every month, takes such an edge off combat and levelling. There's more to do than just that.

Thirdly, and probably most importantly - The players. Its great craic, for a bunch of redneck gun totin' idiot savants that make up Midway, we're so communal. As if insulting and shooting each other is only allowed for citizens of Midway. The fact you only have a few XP to spend means people have lots of wiggle room on character concept, so the diversity of concept is great.

Lustre's correct. Ambidex didn't make a great deal of a difference when you can't hit someone more than once in a second anyway, and was limiting folk in terms of what they could carry and use when and where.

OK, I'd like an independent view on this. Yours!

The scenario: it's July 2013, law and order have collapsed, and you're a bandit in Turkey. You and your 14 buddies control a bridge over a river. One day a heavy military truck races towards your bridge at full speed. You open the fight by successfully firing an RPG into the truck's engine. The reply is a burst of automatic fire - it misses. Momentum carries the truck over the bridge; your men, low on ammo, fire potshots but fail to damage the truck further. A second burst of automatic fire injures your man who fired the RPG.

The truck soon veers off the raised road into a field of long grass. Your gang follows up, unsure of what they'll find. They approach with caution, and rightly so - as soon as they move into visual contact with the truck and its scattered contents they come under grenade fire. They fall back, one of them badly injured. Assessing the situation you determine there's just one man left in the truck. You carefully move into position and kill him, but lose two men to a grenade: one dead, another injured.

You now have:
1 dead
3 injured, with at least 2 in need of urgent medical attention
10 uninjured men (plus yourself) with rifles but low on ammunition.
A heavily damaged truck with assorted goods; value and type unknown, but this could be worth a lot.

You don't know how many other enemies there were. They are not in sight. The right-side cab door of the truck is open. Securing the immediate area while you decide what to do, one of your men says he thinks there are recent tracks leading away through the long grass, going in two directions. From the blood on the grass you're sure that at least one enemy who went into the grass was bleeding. All is quiet.

You need to get your injured men to a doctor - there's a hospital not too far away, in poor condition by pre-collapse standards but much better than nothing. You want to take the goods from the truck, and the truck itself is clearly never moving again, so recovery will take time. You don't care one way or the other about the enemy fighters, except for the possibility they might come back and attack you. It has now been several minutes since the fight started.

What do you do?

UCC WARPS - Forum » Subject: No PC is an Island- Cohesive Party Creation – by: Morgan Allen

Sunday, 06 March 2011 17:30

This was originally published here. Please visit the site if you like this post or wish to comment on it. Pulled from UCC WARPS - Forum
Intro One of the problems, I feel, with a lot of typical character-creation systems is that they allow (or even encourage) the idea of each player rolling up a character in isolation without consulting other players on their relative roles. Unfortunately, the consequence is that it's quite easy for parties to be a collection of mismatched oddballs who lack useful specialties or clear motives for working together. Procedure The basic idea is that you go 'round the table, and have each player pick a specialty- e.g, damage, defence, healing, scouting- that are derived from various skills- e.g, swordsmanship, earth magic, herbalism, camouflage- attached to specific vocations- e.g, military, elementalist, druidist and woodsman, respectively. Obviously, this has to be done as a group. * Every specialty must be taken at least twice. * No two characters can have more than one specialty in common. * Every character must have at least one background vocation in common with another character, to explain how they met and what their relation might be. * A quick-reference table to avoid page-flippage is handy here. Otherwise, players give up trying to understand the system and the GM's free-attention/system-knowledge becomes a kind of bottleneck. * Lifepaths! Because lifepaths are scientifically proven to be 20% cooler (http://tinyurl.com/5royyn3). Here's a miniature version/excerpt, for just 3 specialties and 2 vocations (the exact specialties and vocations you'd need could vary greatly, depending on setting, but you get the idea.)
| MILITANT | NOBLE | -----------|------------|----------------------| FIGHTING: | Any Weapon | Poison and Alchemy, | | | Anatomy, Swordsman | -----------|------------|----------------------| INFLUENCE: | Oratory, | Charm, Oratory, | | Intimidate | Etiquette, Music | -----------|------------|----------------------| LORE: | Geography | Geography, Literacy, | | | Line of Descent |
Examples Aithne and Visric are brother and sister (they share the Lowborn vocation.) Bryce served in the army with Visric (they share the Militant vocation.) Aithne is Meridwyn's apprentice (they share the Druidist vocation.) Bryce owes his life to Meridwyn (who serves as the tribal medicine man.) Anyways, that's probably more than enough detail for now. I just wanted to give some idea of what a system like this could look like. I understand that systems like 4E D&D and Legend of the Five Rings partly address this problem (though strategic niches for each class and establishment of character relations, respectively,) so... what do folks who've played 'em regularly think?

My guess is that the civil war should be wrapping up at this point and we'll see some kind of showdown between Stannis and Dany. Well the fourth book is called "A Feast For Crows" for a reason... ;-) Without wanting to give much away I think your prediction is fairly accurate, although ADWD actually runs concurrently with AFFC so we probably won't see any showdown til the next book after ADWD... which could be another few years!

Con season is upon us once again, bringing with it a festive multitude of games, hangovers, overdrafts, ill-considered purchases, and hairy arse-cracks. And kicking things into gear is Leprecon in Trinity College, Dublin. Shane, Liam, Stu and humbug take to the mics to preview what is Ireland's oldest convention, you know.

Buying some gaming paper, a box of 4* grid and a box of 4* hex. Anyone want to get in on the order? Seems to be no difference in shipping if I order 8 rolls or 48 so if anyone wants to get in on the order let me know.

Noirin Curran wrote: The reason that I am focusing, currently, on the two types of immersion in themselves without attempting to tie them to particular games, is because firstly, it still stands to be seen whether Cognitive and Visceral Immersion stand up on their own. Tying the types to games may be a later point in research, but this is still at the beginning and it would be counter-intuitive to dive in without doing the preliminary work on the constructs. The fact that so many games involve both types of immersion in many different situations within the games would be problematic (although probably equally fascinating) in that vein of research - as for one individual their game style in WoW, as you mentioned it as an example, can be primarily Cognitive, but I doubt it contains not a trace of visceral. You'd be surprised. People do crazy things around Goldshire, apparently. I understand that tying the modes to particular games may well be premature, but tying them to particular media seems, to me, to be tarring with a far broader brush. I mean, if you were to twist my arm, I would guess that TRPGs are somewhat more closely associated with 'cognitive' immersion, but both TRPGs and CRPGs are associated with such a bewildering diversity of design and focus that this tells you very little about what might trigger such engagement. You need a finer sample. *shrugs* My two cents. The two types are clearly quite intertwined, although of course some games/game types/systems promote one type over another. Also, the way in which players initially approach a game can stand to direct the play into being more one type of immersion than the other - or indeed not in immersion at all. I wasn't intending on the immersion implying that visceral and cognitive immersion imply that strategy and tactics don't require thinking - of course they require much thinking, that is an integral part of games such as wargaming or RTS's. Well, my point is that it might be an idea to call them something more neutral. 'Procedural' and 'Environmental' immersion, perhaps, or action-focused and fidelity-focused, game and simulation, etc. I reckon that either type of immersion can occur with or without thinking on the part of the individual player, but then again that depends on many factors (which I have researched and described in another section of my PhD) such as the particular game setting, type of narrative, visuals (or lack thereof), characters, the influence of the GM and other players. Then again, I'm talking about Immersive Response in this current stage of research, and not System Immersion which the majority of the research in this area has attempted to cover. I couldn't really comment further with seeing the paper, but I'm not certain what you mean by 'immersive response' as contrasted with 'system immersion'? Are you talking about the ol' roll-play/role-play dichotomy? Also, at the risk of belaboring the point, I still think the two-way division may be inadequate. 'Research' on the subject hasn't exactly been scientific- though, short of measuring brain activity and endorphin levels in a randomised sample of players, I'm not sure how scientific it's possible to get here- but a great deal of discussion on the subject has gone on for about two decades now. If you want something a little more rigorous, WotC apparently did a survey (http://www.seankreynolds.com/rpgfiles/gaming/BreakdownOfRPGPlayers.html) of some kind back in '99- maybe you've heard of it already, but it seemed pertinent.

Leprecon 32 » You’ve found an item!

There are lots of opportunities to spend money at cons, but at Leprecon this year, we’ve got a weekend-long Special Event that gives you a different kind of opportunity.

In certain places about the hall, there’ll be treasure chests, These chests will be stocked with things donated from the Gamers room and from the committee. If you open the box, and there’s something in it, you can take it! But even these days, we all have more than we need. Our inventories are full. To pick up the item in the chest, you have to leave something there in return. We’re going to take this chance to clear space for new RPG books by passing on ones that don’t get the attention they deserve anymore, so if there are any at home gathering dust, bring them along and see what you might be able to find in exchange!

Good luck!

Emily,

Special Events

Midway Announcements » One Week On From Event VI and Planning for Event VII

Friday, 25 February 2011 10:55

This was originally published here. Please visit the site if you like this post or wish to comment on it. Pulled from Midway Announcements

We're one week past Event VI and all in all the feedback we're receiving is all very positive. Pretty much every player I've spoken to so far has said they really enjoyed it and it was one of the best we've run so far... so that's now the standard we have to live up to and improve upon.

We're now in the planning stages for our next event "Event VII" on Saturday (yes that's Saturday) April 2nd. This is going to be our first full day event starting at 11AM til 8PM (Details as always are on the Events Page). As always we'll be arranging a bus to and from the event from Dublin City Centre, details will follow in another post once we've arranged things. There's also some talk from our players on the Forum about heading to a pub after for a few drinks.

We'd really like to make this event our biggest ever and we've lots of plans, plots and suprises planned but to make it successful we need you, your friends, your family and anyone else you can think of to come along (as long as they're over 18 of course), so please go out and tell everyone about Midway and all the fun you've had at it or if you haven't attended an event ask your friends who have and we're sure they'll tell you to come along! Spread the word! Join us and Welcome to the Beginning...

If you are planning to come along please drop us an email ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it ) or reach out via our Contact Form

Please also check out our Rules and Backround Documents and all the info you need to Create a Character.

NOTE: The Current Rules (Rules 1.4) are currently under Review, we hope to have a new Rules Document out before the Event but in the meantime please refer to Rules 1.4

On another note some of our friends have been creating some Motivational Posters. Check them Out below:

Hi all

The Steve Jackson Games Men In Black Programme, which is the volunteer Demo team for Steve Jackson Games, are looking for recruits. Specifcially, I am looking to get one more MIB in Dublin, 1 or 2 in Cork, 1 in Galway and 1 in Limerick.

All emails will be considered and replied to

Duties include calling into games stores to keep them posted of developments, running demos in clubs and at cons and providing prize supports. MIBs earn points with which they can buy SJGames and also get the chance to be invovled in games in development.

If interested, please email me me OFF LIST ar colm.lundberg-Re5JQEeQqe8AvxtiuMwx3w< at >public.gmane.org

Cheers all
Colm Lundberg

UCC WARPS - Forum » Subject: How to convert WMV on Mac OS? – by: gavinblank

WMV (Windows Media Video) is a popular video type for Windows users, and MOV, MP4 are more widely used for Apple Mac users. So as a Mac user, maybe you often accept WMV video files from your Windows friends, but can't load them into QuickTime, iTunes, iMovie and Final Cut Pro, even can't play them on iPod, iPhone, iPad etc. To convert wmv on Mac (http://www.applemacvideo.com/howtoconvert/wmv-converter-for-mac.html), you can use this powerful wmv converter for mac (http://www.applemacvideo.com/howtoconvert/wmv-converter-for-mac.html). It is useful to convert wmv for mac (http://www.applemacvideo.com/howtoconvert/wmv-converter-for-mac.html). http://www.applemacvideo.com/images/howtoconvert/video-converter-mac.jpg Although WMV is generally packed into the ASF container format, it can also be put into the AVI or Matroska container format. The resulting files claim the .AVI, or .MKV file extensions, respectively. WMV can be stored in an AVI file when using the wmv compression Manager (VCM) codec implementation. wmv converter for mac (http://www.applemacvideo.com/howtoconvert/wmv-converter-for-mac.html) is a good solution to play wmv on mac (http://www.applemacvideo.com/howtoconvert/wmv-converter-for-mac.html). More powerful functions about this application: wmv for mac (http://www.applemacvideo.com/howtoconvert/wmv-converter-for-mac.html); wmv converter mac (http://www.applemacvideo.com/howtoconvert/wmv-converter-for-mac.html); converting wmv mac (http://www.applemacvideo.com/howtoconvert/wmv-converter-for-mac.html). I'm definitely hoping for the expansion of the player base and I think with the coming summer months we'll probably get it. We all should do our part though by dragging other friends with us who might be interested. With the advent of the day game, I think it's likely that well be able to pull some newcomers who might not otherwise come, but im also pretty certain if we do that they'll be back for more.

I'm also proposing to do some photography in a high vis "you don't see me" GM vest during the day game/as evening approaches if our GMs are amenable in an attempt to give them some more to advertise with.

I got asked what it would cost to hire me to train someone (now that I've actually got a skill to the level where I can train.) But as training someone else means I'm not training myself, it means it would take a hell of a lot to persuade me to train an apprentice. However, if teaching were something that could go into the "professional" slot, I'd be more than happy to use that for much less than the 14-20 meals I'd charge otherwise. I would suggest that it probably should be the case that this is an extra slot, not a replacement for the existing slot, as otherwise someone who doesn't have any spare food can't train *at all* which would be worse, rather than better.

UCC WARPS - Forum » Subject: Drama, RP, and Moral Ambiguity – by: Morgan Allen

Tuesday, 15 February 2011 09:05

This was originally published here. Please visit the site if you like this post or wish to comment on it. Pulled from UCC WARPS - Forum
This overall topic came up in a couple of recent conversations I had. It's not addressed to anyone in particular, but I just wanted to clear up my thoughts on the subject. "...For love is the bane of honor, the death of duty. ...What is honor compared to a woman’s love? What is duty against the feel of a newborn son in your arms, or the memory of a brother’s smile? Wind and words. Wind and words. We are only human, and the gods have fashioned us for love. That is our great glory, and our great tragedy. ...A craven can be as brave as any man, when there is nothing to fear. And we all do our duty, when there is no cost to it. How easy it seems then, to walk the path of honor. Yet soon or late in every man’s life comes a day when it is not easy, a day when he must choose." -Maester Aemon of the Night's Watch, A Game of Thrones I'm aware that A Song of Ice and Fire is a pretty GrimDark example, but you can look at, say, Star Wars, and find exactly the same thing. Should Luke stay with his family or learn the ways of the Force? Should Han help out the rebels or pay off his debts to Jabba? Should Leia maintain her stiff pride or admit her feelings for Han? To us, the right responses might seem obvious, but they're certainly not for the characters. Inner conflict between motives == the lack of a clear-cut right and wrong from their perspective == drama. (Obviously, no-one considers their own actions unjustified, or they wouldn't be doing them.) Role-play, I would say, is actually the same thing, only the choice is internalised and reflexive, so that the character doesn't even think about it, most of the time. I mean, how do you really establish that a character is compassionate, except when they make some kind of sacrifice or take a risk for the sake of compassion? Or arrogance. Or honesty. Or a temper. Or any personality trait other than 'perfectly rational self-interest'. Of course, a side-effect of such pressures is that characters tend to change and develop over time. As Planescape: Torment would put it, 'What can change the nature of a man?" Well, presumably experiences that call their beliefs, habits, relationships and goals into question or otherwise undermine them. In other words, drama. The thing is that differences in personality and conflicts in motive should, logically, cause divergant, unpredictable character behaviour a certain percentage of the time, if they come up in play at all. If you actually accommodate that, and allow player choices to have genuine repercussions, any fixed storyline becomes either impossible or counterproductive. And if you don't, role-play and drama tend to become irrelevant, maudlin chores tacked on for the sake of appearances, if they happen at all. That's not to say that you can't have plenty of fun, with or without the drama, but there are basic incompatibilities here that have to be borne in mind.

I had previously suggested that I was going to post the Charter up on the forum. I've changed my mind about that.

In discussion with El Gogz we got to thinking about the game, and the system, and specifically Literacy. Having Literacy as a skill that isn't a default in the game provides us with a lot of fun role-playing, and we feel that putting an IC document on what is primarily an OOC forum runs contrary to allowing that whole opportunity for role-play. Instead, we'll be letting the Charter exist as an IC document, and be seen/read/burned/whatever as an IC document.

Sorry for the confusion.

That's my assumption, too. We'll have to see how it pans out.

Bazleebub wrote:If you can see a way it could work or a suggestion that could help go for it.

One possible idea is that it could be tied to the physrep of the magazine. Practically speaking, a reload lammy isn't going to be any use unless you have a spare magazine/clip/bullet-holding-device-of-choice, and most people with multiple reloads are going to have a spare, loaded, magazine with them for the extra reload.

So, you could just say "you must have a magazine/clip of the appropriate type in order to use a reload lammy", and then you're good to go. If we just take that a step further, we can say that the magazine is separate from the reload lammy, and once it's empty, you need to get the bullets to reload it somehow, either by attaching a full reload lammy of the correct type, or trading in the correct number of bullet/other reload-type lammies with GOD.

This would justify having bullet lammies, and gives a reason why reloads, in general, would be worth trading around - if I have an empty AR magazine and a couple of Shotgun reloads, it's suddenly worth my time to go trading for the extra bullets to load up my mag.

I'm making the assumption that a bullet will work in any gun type, regardless of the original source, by the way. I'm not going to get into the debate concerning the compatibility of different calibre ammunition - future-tech handwavium did it, that's how.
