Hotel Discount

What is the shortest stroll to Gaelcon in the D4Hotel conventions centre? Why it has to be from a hotel room in the Ballsbridge Inn and for those who are looking at booking in for the weekend

there is a 'Gaelcon price'. For the Saturday night the it is 79 per room and for the Sunday night the price is 59 per room. To make sure you get this price mention Gaelcon when making your booking.

If you do not wish to stay in the hotel attached to the conference centre (which Gaelcon is taking over for the weekend) and are looking for other suggestions then there are listings on the info page.

Hi, welcome to Gaelcon's frontpage!

I am Convention Director for Gaelcon 2009, this is the 21st time someone has taken up that mantle.

Know what I find intimidating? It's not organising a motley crew to run events, herd gamers (you ever tried to herd cats with ADHD?) for a weekend nor competing with the other conventions running this year to make mine the most enjoyable.

Ok it's no easy task, but if I didn't think I could do it then I wouldn't have stepped forward for this position. And I invited all the other Con Directors of Irish Conventions to Gaelcon to make sure they'll be on hand to bring more fun and so I can their brains as needed.

But no one said I had to write! I don't communicate by the written word. I'm not that guy. I say things in flat, unemotional ways and people always think I'm being sarcastic. I'm not. Honestly. I talk. Face to face or on the phone, I talk because I can put emotion and personality in my voice that I just can't with text. But I've got to write this, so here's what I came up with

I love to talk (stop laughing, the sentence continues) about Gaelcon. So much so that I bought a phone that everyone can use to do just that. Gaelcon (+353) 085 147 68 50.

If I could leave it at that I'd be happy.

I've just checked, I can't. Apparently more people will visit the site than will want to talk to me. Go figure.

First things (quick count) Fifth? Argh, I can't do this!

First thing first (shh)

Gaelcon is going to be divided into teams. We will have Old Vs New.

Anyone who has been to more than four Gaelcons is, for the purposes of the weekend, Old. (personally I've been to 10 and I feel like a spring chicken when I sit next to Anton and Guy). Anyone been to fewer than four? Well they're a New gamer. The aim of the event is to get people involved. You earn points for your team for participation and for certain games (like Nes Vs Wii Duckhunt, but you didn't hear it from me) and at the end we tally up and we decide who gives the best game. Will the youngsters enthusiasm and innocence stand to them or will the hard bitten, hard won experience of the old crew prevail? Your choice.

Next.

We are going to run late night slots. A wise man once asked me what was the point of a gaming convention and then asked me to look at the name. Games. Right, lets run 15 per slot. No, wait, that'll never work. First; how do we get that many written without leaving no one left to play and second; with that many games everyone will miss at least one game they'd love to play. So; more slots. And they're the ones that'll test you. We now have a slot that starts at 11pm and we won't be calling time until 4am. Yes that's a five hour slot that doesn't start until when most of us would be going home (or to the pub) after the con.

Now we just need writers, GMs and staff tough enough to run the convention for the night shift (I'll be safely tucked up in bed I promise - probably even my own, I'll be tired). Now have four slots a day, with two before and two after 7pm, we are initiating a 7pm watershed. Games with adult content will be run later in the day (/night) and games that merely contain violent action and complex, heartbreaking decisions will be relegated to the daytime.

Onwards.

I've got a list from This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it of Special Events that he wants to run. It's long and satisfying  These include Main Stage Sunday, with our Rock Band tournament and Saturday's costume competition which is split into the under 16's Geekiest Kid Award and the over 17's I Didn't Need Mommy To Help With My Costume Award (that name may well be changed).

Needless to say, I won't be telling you all the Special Events here (to protect the guilty). But know ye this: the Special Events overunneth (I told you text wasn't my medium, if I'd done that in real life there would have been the flowery hand movements and probably a bow to really sell it. In text? It just comes off weird. Still that's not inaccurate).

Further onwards.

We have a writers only event called the Hack and Slash write off. Everyone who submits a game to Gaelcon is eligible. Twenty odd writers enter a room, one leaves. Then the others leave. But they all know who left first. Yeah, intimidating sounding right? (shut up).

Well those are the only details that are available to us who don't write, if we wanna know more either write for the Gaelcon or mug someone who writes for the Gaelcon.

Still more? Can't I stop please?

Why are you still reading this? If it wasn't for you I could stop. If you agree to stop reading here I can fill in the rest with quotes from famous books.

I've watched through his eyes, I've listened through his ears, and I tell you he's the one. Call me Ishmael. The sun rose slowly, as if it wasn't sure that it was worth all the effort. Whether I shall turn out to be the hero of my own life, or whether that station will be held by anybody else, these pages must show.

Oh.. you're still here. That's not fair. I gave you tasters and teasers and everything. Fine I'm gonna have to actually write more but first I'm gonna try something.

Have you heard we're moving? Yeah the place looks great and they're really nice to us. Read more here.

We also are still accepting submissions for games. Read the guidelines here.

For those of you who play and paint miniature/wargames games, please fill out our online questionnaire.

Did you read our April fools' page? It is mean as sin.

Do you want to PreBook?

Did you fall for it? Follow one of my lovely links? No, or maybe you're torturing me by coming back to finish the frontpage, so now I have to compete with my committee in writing prowess?

Well I won't play your game! I'm nearly done anyway. Hah!

Really all else that needs saying is that, I am genuinely happy to be contacted in relation to Gaelcon either by email This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it or phone me on (+353) 085 147 68 50.

I'm always willing to listen to suggestions or at least pass them on to the committee member who actually knows something about that part of our hobby.

Come to Gaelcon. You'll be glad you did.
